Q: What does Tom Petty, Weezer, Jesus Lizard, Suicide Machines, L7, Queens of the Stone Age, Anthrax, Fastball, Veruca Salt, Limp Bizkit, Treble Charger, Melvins, Rancid, Bad Religion, Judas Priest, Tool, Kelly Clarkson, Wolfmother, Regina Spektor, Chevelle, and Sound Garden all have in common?
A: They all have a record with a triangle on it.
That’s because they’ve all at one point in time recorded with Joe Barresi who admits to putting a triangle on every album he works on. Sometimes you can find it, sometimes you can’t. And Joe isn’t telling.
Joe Barresi instantly became one of my favorite engineers as soon as I heard “Little Sister” by Queens of the Stone Age. I’ve since listened to everything Joe has done and guitars and drums always amaze me. The vocal work with QOTSA really resonates with me.
I put Joe Barresi in the company of Andy Wallace, Eddie Kramer, Michael Brauer, and Jack Joseph Puig on my list of most influential on my work. Later in 2013 or 2014 I’ll be making a trip out to Pasadena to sit with Joe for a couple days. I need to know how to get the best triangle sounds.
