Everyone in pro audio has heard of Jensen but not everyone has heard of Hardy. Along comes a piece of equipment, introduced in 1988, that only the finest purveyors of sound know about and own.
Rather than dry up this review with specifications and performance data, which can be found here if you’re interested, I’d rather share some opinions of my own and others about where this can be used and where it shines. But first, a quick mention about Deane Jensen and John Hardy.
“Deane Jensen, the original founder, embarked on a quest in the early ’70’s to unravel the shortcomings of audio transformers. He realized that transformers of that era were often the root cause of “bad” sounding equipment and therefore committed heavily to basic research related to precision and waveform fidelity. Much of this pioneering work focused on audio transformers and their interface with system electronics. Jensen designed transformers having the response of a Bessel low pass filter, which by definition, has virtually no phase distortion, ringing, or waveform overshoot. Initially, Jensen Transformers’ development lab and office was an apartment in Hollywood. By 1980, the transformers had become the industry standard facilitating a move to larger offices. Jensen now resides in Chatsworth, California.” – From Jensen Transformers, Inc.
John Hardy :
John Hardy discussing the Twin Servo:
My personal take on the Twin Servo is that it’s really transparent and clean but not clinical. There is a little bit of mojo imparted on the source but unless you’re comparing it to an ultra-pristine preamp, you’re probably not going to notice. This preamp shines on lots of vocals and on acoustic sources like guitars, orchestras, and anything else that you want to have a natural recording of. You can really push this preamp without it breaking up and it sounds smooth and silky, if I am allowed to use those words to describe a sound.
What I liked best about this unit is that I had it made to order by John Hardy and I got to speak with him several times. He’s a really nice guy and he provides all the support you can need. There’s nothing sweeter than quality gear that’s made by genuinely, friendly people.
